SIMON BOLIVAR
CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS. (Official Wireless). RUGBY, Dec. 17. Mr Arthur Henderson (Foreign Secretary) spoke at the centenary celebration of the death of Simon Bolivar. He reviewed Bolivar’s work and attitude toward Great Britain under Canning and claimed that Bolivar signally deserved the name of “ The Liberator,” as five States ascribed their independence to, him. The ielations between the British Government and the countries which looked to Bolivar as a national hero continued to be most friendly, and never had been more cordial than they were to-day. Mr Henderson concluded: *<< Xor do 1 forget the importance of their contribution to the League of Nations’ work for world pence. On behalf of the British Government 1 cordially wish them many more centuries of prosperity and progress.” [Simon Bolivar, named El Lihortador for having rescued South America from the Finnish yoke, was l-orn m Caracas, in wlmt is now Venezuela, on January 24. 1773. and was descended from, a noble and wealthy family. He was virtually the liberator of Venezuela. Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the latter (Uoper T**™) taking the name in his honour. He has been described as the Washington of South America. He died at San Pedro, near Santa Martin, on December 17th. 1830, and in 1842 his remains were removed with great pomp to his birthplace. Caracas.
