BREAKING-UP; DAY. The Hokitika State School .“broke up” for the Christmas • hplidays-. yesterday afternoon. There was a goodly gathering of parents, and. -several members of the Committee, also ihe Mayor (Mr Perry), •• R«vd. : Knights* Mr W. Haybittle and others. The school pupils’ marched to their' places to the martial strains of’ “Sea. the Conquering Heroes Gome,” played by the lately formed ’ School Drum and Fife Band under Tom Brown.
Mr A. C. Armstrong, Chairman of the School Committee presided very affably, having the Mayor on h:s right and the Rector {Mr Menzies): on his left, while the staff was present also in force. The Chairman explained hriefly the object of the gathering and congratulated the band on its first appearance. He read 1 a Christmas message from Mr E. Partridge, ex-Rector, which was received with applause. Mr Armstrong said he <vas glad to announce that the year had been a good one for the School, which had, secured a record number of proficiency passes. A verse of the School song followed. . * Mr G. A. Perry, 0.8. E.. spoke briefly congratulating thje girls and boys on the year’s work. He hoped they would return after the holidays in good heart and \ork harder than * • ' 1 Revd. G. Knowles Smith joined in the chorus of good wishes. He pointed out thnt success was a failure when it was won by unfair meahs, while failure was a success where the effort had been real. Success came from honest work, and he advised all to work with all their might so as to be fully equipped when going out into the world, and the battle of life. The .presentation of prizes followed, the Mayoress (Mrs Perry) handing the. gifts to the winning pra>ils. The dux of the school (Miss Violet Ross) was noplauded loudly. Mr H. M. Coulson, as President of the Rugby Uttioh, presented the Newman Shield and the Shrimps Shield, donated by Mr Haybittle, and seven medals presented ,to the team by Mr Morpeth, Mr Coulson congratulated the "School op. its success at play as well as work.
Mp .D. J. Evans, President of the Swimming Club, presented the swimming certificates ,to ..those who had won learners’ certificates. Mr Evans hoped, the life-saving competitions would he revived when the School re'sumed. ' ' : ’ 1
Mr J.i R.. Mepzies, .Rector, thanked parents,' committee and staff for their great help to the school. His seven months sojourn here had been very happy and he was not . desirous of leaving them. .On behalf of the staff; and some of. the pupils he presented several gifts to, Mrs M. Dale, who was retiring .after 15 years service at the. School. Mr Menzies spoke highly of.' Mrs Rale’s sendees and "the example she had get the staff always, Mr C. G. Warren acknowledged the gift on behalf of'Mrs Dale. , The Chairman then eulogised the spontaneous work of M r W. E. Richards in forming and building up Lhe band, and on behalf of the band loin Brown made' a ipresentation to Mr Richards, accompanied bv the cheers of the bandsmen. Mr Richards, token by surprise,. made a feeling reply, and at ihe request ,of the Chairman the-Band played two short airs. Following cheers' for the School, the proceedings closed with ,tho singing’of the National Anthem, led by the Band, which it .was stated will -' accompany the School on the annual excursion in February,
