Many friends throughout the Most Coast will r .grst to learn of the death yesterday at Reefton Hospital, of Mr James Murphy, of Waiuta, and a son of Mrs and the late Josepn Murphy, of Dillmanstown, Kumara, at the age of 36 years, as the result of an attack of pneumonia. Deceased, who had been engaged on the boiler staff at Waiuta mine, was taken seriously ill on Sunday, and though brought to the hospital, gradually grew worse urti' death ensued. The sudden appearance of an octupuß in the shallow waters of the northeasterly beach at Point Chevalier, Auckland, on Sunday afternoon, alarmed a band of small children who were bathing within a few feet of it when it was first noticed, The beach, which is not much frequented by bathers, is partly rocky, and lies inside a rocky reef from which it is considered the octupus came. When first noticed the octupus was moving towards the children, who quickly left the water. A long sharpened stick was procured, and not much' difficulty was experienced in spearing the body of the octupus. The fact that it was on sand and could not get a grip of the rocks made it an easier prey than had been expected. Each tentacle was over three feet in length.

The breaking up for the Christmas holidays of the Humphrey’s School was celebrated yesterday afternoon (Thursday) by a picnic in the School grounds. During the afternoon a number of fiat races and novelty races were run, which proved very exciting to the contestants, the vigilant committee carefully allotting a-gift to each child pupil. Afternoon tea was freely distributed to both parents and children after which the Chairman (Mr Lopas) presented the prizes urging the scholars to cherish them as long as they lived. He had to congratulate the teacher (Miss Shaw) on the excellent progress of the pupils for the year, and said early in the New Year a piano for the use of the school was to be purchased. A picnic whs to he organized at the resumption of School in February to Kanieri Lake, which would be run mostly for educational' benefits for the pupils. Mr Lopas on behalf of the Committee and parents wished Miss Shaw and her pupile a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
