FARMERS’ UNION

The quarterly conference of the West Coast Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Greymouth on Tuesday, the president (Mr W. Fisher) presiding over a good attendance of delegates.

The meeting approved a remit from Ngahere branch: “That the Government be requested to consider the subsidising of work in breaking in land on the West Coast.” It was urged that bush falling be paid for either by contract or wages.

Messrs I). Shannahan, W. Clayton, and W. Fisher were appointed to attend tlic 1 meeting convened by the Mayor of Greymouth, on. December ißth, to consider unemployment relief.

The Grey Valley branch’s remit: ‘That owing to till l slump in the dairy produce market, the Dairy Control Board he uregd to forego the ievy on export butter and cheese, for the present season,” was approved.

Harihari branch remits were approved ns follows:—(1) That it be a recommendation to the Provincial Executive to request the Dominion quarterly meeting to demand dental treatment for country school children, in the form of a travelling dental clinic, or any service equal to that given in the towms, as the need is greater in the country schools owing to the lack of ordinary service; (2) that the Commissioner of Crown Lands be urged to forward to the Lands Department a request that the drainage engineer he sent to examine the one swamp area immediately; (3) that Dominion headquarters be re. quested to advise if county councirs can legally collect rates on farm lands having no road access. Mr James O’Brien, M.P., who was present, promised to support any i quest made by the Farmers’ Union for travelling dental clinics for the treatment of school children. He also gave an informative address in regard to the Unemployment Funds.
