Hie Durham native police have been .threatening for some years to burn jthe passes'. on the Anniversary Day of served as a public holiday. This year .there were no threats of any demon’stration, but a crowd of a thousand gathered outside Durhan, and printed fdogers stated: “This is the day for quitting the passes ,in hell.” An injflammatory speech was made by a native who announced himself as the organiser of the Communists. It was decided that tffe natives should form up -and march to the town in order to •join the natives ifrom the docke. The Inspector of police forbade the march. ,Ihe natives defied the order. There ,11 on, fifty police armed with pickhandles, charged. They were met with a filsilade of stones..

One .native was killed. Seven including the organiser wore seriously injured-
