The alternative vote gives the widest possible opportunity for political wanglers art, said Sir John Simon, in a speech at Cieckheaton, in explaining his reasons for disagreement with Ur Lloyd George on that subject, Mr Lloyd George said that failing proportional representation ho wins prepared to accept the alternative vote.
Sir J. Simon declared the adoption of the alternative vote would increase the evil of electoral bargaining, because every party would lie tempted to make bargains, concerning advite in regard to the use of the second preference. “I do not think it is in the interest of the good of the Government and sound democracy that brer rabbits should possess two holt hole's out of which to pop according to the convenience of the moment. We ought to stand firmly for proportional representation as the fairest to all parties.”
