Tt is curious to note that although England received the film “All Quiet on the Western Frbnt”, as a war masterpiece, a fierce battle of opinion over it is proceeding in Germany. The German republicans regard the film as being a true picture of the war, but-to nearly everybody else, and especially to the Nationalists it is. a grotesque caripatiire, and is injurious to Germanyin ’.the, eyes of the world.

One Republican:- newspaper . says:— “It is astonishing that this hook by a Germari'sdlciier should be filled in such a- way that nowhere can anything be seen offensive to Germans.”

O.n The contrary the great Catholic Organ,. “Germania,” says:—“The:, picture that is presented of the German soldier in this film is a libel on the millions of our dead. Remarque’s men are not men with body and soul, but are only soulless debauchees thinking of nothing but of guzzling and boozing—trembling in every limb when they are in trenches, or are exposed to shell fireThe German soldier was not like that, even in the autumn of 1918, when demoralisation had already made rapid progress.

The Monarchist and Fascist press of course, are furious, and they describe the exhibition of the film as being a political scandal. (
