CHARGE AGAINST SOLICITOR

AUCKLAND, December 5,

Brian Dunningham, the young Auckland sold tor, who was arrested as he was about to sail from Wellington to San Francisco, on Tuesday afternoon, appeared before Mr E. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court, this morning.

Accused, for whom Mr G. P. F nlay appeared, was charged with aiding and abetting a man and woman in making a declaration that would amount to perjury, if made on oath in a judicial proceeding. The Crown Solicitor (Mr V. R. Meredith) obtained a remand until December 11. Accused’s bail was renewed. FIFTEEN THEFT CHARGES. NAPIER, December 5. George Reginald Harrison, aged 19, was sentenced at Hastings to-day by Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., to terms of imprisonment, of from three to twelve months on fifteen charges of theft over a period c'f eight or nine months. As a result of some of the sentences being cumulative, accused will serve eighteen months. Harrison admitted all the charges, which involved sacks, motor car wheels, and tyres, tools, a bicycle, a battery, fencing wire and other tilings, ftnv of which have been recovered. A detective stated that to-morrow accused would plead guilty to a large number of indictable charges.

JOCKEY'S DEATH DUE TO FALL

AUCKLAND, December 5

The inquest concering the death of Benjamin Kinsman Deeley, aged 48, the well-known jockey, who was found in a state of collapse at his houjg. hi Green Lane early on Thursday morning and died in Auckland Hospital some hours’'later,’ was opened by the Coroner, Mr Hunt. S.M. Medical evidence was not taken, but the police report stated that the supposed cause of death was fracture of the skull and cerebral haemmorhage, following an accidental fall. The inquest was adjourned sine die. NEW ZEALAND FLYING BOAT. WELLINGTON. December 4. For use on the Welliugton-Nelson air service, the Saro-Windhover flying boat is expected to arrive in New Zealand next week. At present, it is aboard the steamer Port Huon which is due at Auckland on Friday next. The machine is the first of its type to be built, and was put through tests by Flight Lieut. Scott of the Saunders Roe Company on October 16 and 17. Unon arrival it will be assembled at Hobsonville Air Base. On account of the long ocean voyage, the wing was made in three sections. The machine is similar to the four seater Cutty Sark, which is at Hobsonville Base, save that it is larger and has three De Haviland Gipsy engines, each 105 h.p.. suspended above the wing, instead of two in the earlier model. It has accommodation for five passengers and a pilot.

A NEW COAIPANY. WELLINGTON, December 6. Forty thousand acres of land, known as Keene’s estate, situated at Parenga, North Island, have been purchased by a company with the object of developing the tung oil industry in New Zealand. The transaction was completed in Wellington, yesterday by H. R. Jenkins, who states capital amounting to ten thousand is available and lie will be able to conclude negotiations with the trustees of the estate on satisfactory terms.

Tlie company plans to erect its own plant, crushing and refining, and it is intended to proceed with the planting of a considerable area immediately the preliminaries of the formation of the company are concluded. ITALIAN ADMISSION. AA'ELLTNOTON, December 6. Tn connection wfth the Italian cable, the position so far as admission of Italians is concerned was officially explained to a “Post” representative. Tt was stated that the Italians referred to in the cable would not fie allowed to land in New Zealand either for permanent or temporary residence unless they were in possession of permits to do so. It is impossible, in absence of the names of the Italians, to sav whether permits have been issued by the Customs Department.
