When two bricklayers missed their footing while working on the roof oi a building in Sydenham on Wednesday afternoon and fell about twenty feet to itho floor below, ono of them, Frank Soanes’, a middle-aged man, suffered serious injuries. His leg was fractured below the knee. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital where lie is progressing favourably;' A slight earthquake shock Wfts recorded at the Christchurch Observer tory on Tuesday morning just before 0.23 o'clock. The tremor was only i’’st severe enough to be shown on the instruments at the observatory, and very few people in the city knew anything about it. At Rangiora, however, a distinct shock was experienced, waking many residents of the borough, although no damage was done. There the- ’quake was preceded by a loud, rumbling sound, like thunder, which many people heard.
When in South Westland this week, Mr O’Brien, M.P., received enquiries for work and promised when in Wellington to endeavour to have further authorities issued. Mr O’Brien conferred with the County authorities in regard to the expenditure of grants. It was explained that several proposals were in awaiting approval, but. the district quota for the year had been authorised, and there would be some delay in the Issue of further authorities unless the works could be authorised from money available for unenWoyment. It was explained that with the exhaustion of the authorities very little extra labour was now being employed by the County Council, and many local men were seeking employment. Mr O’Brien stated he would make the strongest recommendations possible to the Government on the matter.
