Miss Margaret Bondfield (Minister of Labour) moved for an increase of the borrowing powers of the Unemployment Insurance Funds by ten millions sterling, bringing them up to seventy millions. This fund’s debt now i stands at fifty-six million sterl-ing-and it is increasing at the rate of forty millions per year. The total benefits, plus the cost of. the * interest and 1 administration, is 107 millions per year.
The motion for the increase was carried by 274 votes to 214. An inquiry is to be held in the House of Commons, Mr Snowden, (Chancellor of the Exchequer) announced the appointment of a Royal Commissioner to inquire into the working of the Unemployment insurance scheme t under the chairmanship of Judge Holman.
