The Hokitika School Committee decided at its meeting last evening to hold the ,annual school excursion on Wednesday, February 11th, and that a visit be made to Blackball.
The Kokatahi Lilies who were reorganised some time ago and have since been diligently practising a,rc giving their initial performance in the Public Hall, Kokatahi, on Wednesday of next week. A grand iball will iollow the concert.
The annual iSt. Patrick’s School Contend took place in the Kumara Memorial Hall on Friday evening, before a large audience when a very attractive programme was enjoyed, hearty receptions being accorded the various performers.
Race cutting operations lor the T\nujeri Electric Ltd. at Kanieri Forks, are now being pushed ahead. Two mechanical diggers are at work on the excavations for the race, while flume construction is also progressing. Access is now being opened to the Kanieri river from Coal creek, where portion of the river is to lie diverted into the race now under construe, tion. A concrete dam is to be thrown across the stream, and later an 'additional power station is to be placed in that vicinity to augment the supply of power for the operations of the Company.

The primary and district high schools in the Canterbury Education Board’s district will close for the Christmas holidays on Thursday, December 18th.
Over three weeks have elapsed says the Grey “Argus” since his disappearance, without any trace of Em:fit Burr having been discovered. The police continued their investigations yesterday at Marsden, without any result being arrived at, that would lead to any ‘ definite conclusion, as to the missing man’s fate. Regarding the bloodstains found in his house, it has been ascertained by the police, that Burr on the night of bis disappearance, had cut himself whilst shaving, and it is thought probable that this mnv account for the stains.
“It seems to be one of the chief functions of a Governor-General to open things,” said Lord Bledisloe at the opening of extensions to the Rangiora High School farm recently. “At one time I find myself opening Parliament, at another time conferences, then agricultural shows and then letters from various ambitious people who desire to be Prime Minister of this country and seem to think I can effect the process. However, I have never before had the interesting experience of opening a farm.” He could only hope, he said, that as a result of the ceremony the gate he opened would be in every sense a gateway to a field of extended, useful and practical knowledge.
Lecturing in Wellington upon the recent solar eclipse expedition, Dr. C. E. Adams said that it was curious that the apparent diameters of the sun and the moon were the same. He knew of no reason, although there might possibly he one, why this should he so. Tf it were not so, the wonderful phenomenon of a total eclipse of the sun could not take place. They were told, however, that the moon was gradually shrinking, so in a. few million years hence possibly there would he no such thing as a total eclipse of the sun, and he suggested to his audience that in view of this they should take any opportunitv offering for seeing such an event before it was too late.
