MONDAY, DECEMBER Ist
As from to-day, the programmes of the YA stations have been arranged according to an extended schedule, increasing the hours devoted to the lighter forms of entertainment. Tn view of the difficulty of providing programmes to please the diversified tastes of a radio audience, the Broadcasting Company devised a scheme of broadcasting different .types of programmes nightly from its stations so that New Zealand listeners may Rave the choice of several programmes to tune in for an evening’s entertainment. In future, ■operatic and classical programmes, hitherto occupying two evenings, will be combined into one and will be followed by a session of dance music. Thus, one more night every week from every station will be devoted to a concert of the “popular type”. Devotees to the lighter forms of entertainment will be specially pleased. From one station or another, on every week night, dance music will be broadcast. Dance music will be available from 2YA on three nights of the week and from IYA, 3YA and 4YA on two nights.
The Wellington Caledonian Society is holding its St. Andrew’s Day Concert this evening, and the entertainment will be relayed by 2YA. An excellent vocal programme will be given and a feature of the concert will, of course, be tile selections by the Wellington Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band. The Chieftian of the Society, Mr R. H. Nimmo, will make the formal speech of welcome. Mr J. Lothian, one of Wellington’s foremost Scottish reciters, will give several items and Mr Robt. McKeen. M.P., will give an address appropriate to the occasion.
The Municipal Band under Mr J. Scott has an attractive programme ready for 3YA. As a euphonium solo, Bandsman J. Magrath will play “My Pretty Jane.” A fine programme has also been arranged by the Christchurch Broadcasting Trio. The vocalists for the evening will be Mrs Lucy O’Brien (soprano), Mrs Nellie Whitworth (mez-zo-contralto) and Mr Donald McCulloch (bass-baritone). A novel programme is to be presented from 4YA. Tt will depict “A Social Evening in a Country Barn.” With only one or two exeeptiows, all ■ the items on this occasion will he those sung in the ’eighties and ’nineties.
