HOPEFUL VIEW

OF STOCK EXCHANGE CHAIRMAN.

IBy Telegraph—Prees Association).

WELLINGTON, November 30. During the course of his remarks at the annual meeting of the Wellington Stock Exchange, Mr R. Wynn Kirkby, the retiring chairman, said that while investors and brokers might be disturbed in the present economic situation in Australia and New Zealand, and throughout the world, he viewed the future with the utmost confidence. Looking back over the past, lie could recall many difficult times through which New Zealand had passed—some of them more, aiid some of them less, intense than the present... New Zealand’s financial position, : as revealed in its overseas trading returns and banking figures, was quite sound. “The flocks and herds on which- we rely 7 for our main income/’ lie said, “are larger than ever before', and consequently the production of wool, meat and dairy produce has increased greatly, which largely offsets the lower prices now being realised.” The Empire generally, .lie said, had passed through great crisis than this one in the past, and it would almost certainly do so again. As soon as the conditions in Australia became nearer normal,, the * effect would be felt here in a rapid recovery. While the .present was .a time for intense effoi;t by. all, to meet the situation, it was. also time when hope must predominate. Before very long; he felt sure, New Zealand and Australia, with their wonder Ail powers of recuperation, would be able to look back on this year with equanimity as a period of necessary readjustment, such as had been gone through in the past.
