It has been decided to bold the annual sawmill employees picnic on (Pass Square, on Saturday, February 231 h. On Saturday night a meeting was held whereat the preliminary arrangements for the big gathering wore put Hi hand.

Quinnat salmon are again appearing in Lake Kanieri, and on Friday a local fisherman secured three good fish. Sport about Lake Kanieri also includes deer stalking, the week end being generally the popular time for a raid. As a result, venison is beiug added to many local menus. One good head was secured last week. A fine head was found in the bwh on the Whitcombs Pass route last week. A party of workmen have been repairing the track in the upper reaches of the Hokitika river, and the head was found nearby, evidently one of the deer wounded at the time of last year’s stalking.

The death took place at Ins sou’s residence, Puketahi Street, Greymouth, yesterday, of a highly respected pinner of the West Coast,, in the person of Mr Thomas Handle, at the grand old age of 95 years. A native of St,. Austell, Cornwall, he came to New Zealand at the time of the rush. He was in the Hokitika district in the sixities, and he was one of those whom the notorious bushrangers Burgess, Levy, Kelly and Sullivan stuck no in Westland before they went to Nelson, and lived for 44 years at No Town. His wife predeceased him some ten years ago. He is survived by three ions, Edward, Thomas and Clement (Grevmonth), and two daughters, Mrs B. Heffernnn (Greymqulh), and Mrs Moore (Cohden).

At a conference of medical men in Auckland last week one doctor referred to people who insist on-being X-rayed without any special benefit to themselv-’ es (says the “Star”). “They come for a repeat examination week atfer week, and think it is the right thing to do. So keen are they on being done that anyone would think that- they were ‘life-members’ of the X-ray department.” “We would like to think that X-ray is the last word in diagnosis,” said another doctor, “but we know it is not. Many people are inclined to trust too much to X-ray, when, if the doctor only used his experience, better results might be obtained,”
