RADIO PROGRAMME

SATURDAY, NOVEAIBER 29th

During the afternoon from IYA there will be a relay of the results of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting, interspersed with the selected gramophone records. As this is the eye of St. Andrew’s day, the whole of lYA’s programme will be devoted to, Scottish songs and humour. The Auckland District Highland Pipe Band will give several numbers that will warm the hearts of ail Scots. The popular Scottish soprano, Miss Beta McCullay, will once again be heard in several national ballads and the String Octet will play many numbers redolent of the land of the heather. 2YA will relay from the Concert Chamber, Wellington Town Hall, the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association Male Voice Choir’s last concert of the season. The choir performs under the conductorsbip of Air John Dishop and can be relied upon to give a concert of merit and interest.

The pipe band of the Caledonian .Society of Christchurch has been engaged for its St. Andrew’s Day Coni cert. The band plays under Pipe Major Chas. Gibson and a. rare treat wili Ire provided for lovers of Highland music. Introduced into the programme will be recorded .talk by the lit. Hon. J. Ramsay Macdonld on “Robert Burns—a man amongst men.” The contralto, Alr,s D. W. Stnllard and Mr Roht. Allison, will be singing favourite Scottish numbers, while Scottish humour of the Dander type will be (riven bv Air Jock Rockhart. This concert will be relayed to 41 r A. MONDAY, DECEMBER Ist. As from to-day, the programmes of the YA stations have been arranged according to an extended schedule, increasing the hours devoted to the lighter forms of entertainment. Tn view of the difficulty of providing programmes to please the diversified tastes of a radio audience, the Broadcasting 'Company devised a scheme of broadcasting different types of programmes nightly from its stations ,so that New Zealand listeners may have the .choice of several programmes to tune in for an evening’s entertainment. In future, •operatic and classical .programmes, hitherto occupying two evenings, will be combined into one and will be followed by a session of dance music. Thus, one more might every Week from every station will be devoted .to a concert of the “popular type”. Devotees to the lighter, forms of entertainment will be specially pleased. From one station or another, on-everv week night, dance music will he broadcast. Dance music will be available from 2YA on throe nights of the week and from IYA, 3YA and 4YA on two nights. The Wellington Caledonian Society is holding its St. Andrew’s Day Concert this evening, and the entertainment will be relayed by 2YA. An excellent vocal programme will be given and a feature of the concert will, of course, be the selections by the Wellington Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band. The Chioftian of the Society, Air It. H. Nimmo, will make the formal speech of welcome. Air J. Lothian, one of Wellington’s foremost Scottish reciters, will give several items and, Mr Robt. McKeen, M.P., will give an address appropriate to the occasion. The Municipal Band under Air J. Scott has an attractive programme ready for 3YA. As a euphonium solo, Bandsman J. ATagrath will play “Aly Pretty Jane.” A fine programme has also been arranged by tile Christchurch Broadcasting; Trio. The vocalists for the evening will he Airs Lucy O’Brien (soprano), Airs Nellie Whitworth (mez-zo-contralto) and Mr Donald AlcCulloch (bass-baritone).

A novel programme is to be presented from 4YA. Tt will depict “A Social Evening in a Country Barn.” With only one or two exceptions, all the items on this occasion will be those sung in the ’eighties and ’nineties. A particularly fine combination, well known in Dunedin as Dagg’s Band which specialises in the presentation of old time dance music, has been engaged. Silent day at IYA.
