As the sequel to a sensational smash on a railway crossing at Hawera on October 24, when the mPtbY lorry lie drove was hurled a considerable distance by a passenger train, and he miraculously escaped injury, WfJliam Greig pleaded guilty to-day to a police charge of attempting to- proceed over ■ the crossing when it was not clear. In the Supreme Court the hearing of three charges of , theft against Roy Gladstone Ewart, by trade a mercer, of Blenheim, occupied the whole of the day. It was -alleged v, that in March, April and July last, lie received certain sums ranging from two pounds to five on terms requiring him to account for the same to Nathan i Tossman, furrier, of Christchurch, and failed to do so, thereby committing the crime of theft. After a retirement of four hours, the jury disagreed. Judge | Reed ordered a new trial for next sessions. ' 1 ? THEFT OF MOTOR CYCLE. WELLINGTON, NovemVr 2T Tn the Magistrate’s Court. Clement Robert Lawson, salesman, was 'charge! with stealing a motor cycle valued at £80; and a Post Office momy la.x valued at £1 9s, and with being in possession of an unregistered rifle. The evidence given for the police . alleged that the accused, after stealing the motor cvele, had considerably ...altered it- and ’it cost £25 or £3O, to pilt iU in order again. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed for trial.
GOAL PREFERRED TO ROTOROA. AUCKLAND. November 26. Hugh Jones 49, a seaman, who escaped from Rotoroa, the inebriates’ island, in a dinghy, with,;improvised oars, was to-day charged, with assaulting the manager of the home, converting a dinghy, and escaping. He was sentenced in all to ..five months in prison ,and ordered to pay £7 for the dinghy. Tt was stated in evidence that Jones had asked last Saturday if he could he sent to gaol. When sentenced today. he thanked the Magistrate.
