WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. Owing to U 1 jam in the steering gear, the Matangi took a sheer passing Queen Charlotte Sound last night, and touched Tightly on a ledge in the vicinity of Rock. After ascertaining .there was no apparent damage,' Captain ,Hay proceeded on to Nelson. . >
As' a precautionary measure, the Matangi will go on the patent slio on returning to Wellington to undergo examination.

A total 0f’61,261 torn* increase in trade of the Port of Wellington or 2.8 per cent during the year ended 'September 30. as compared with the preceding year;! was reported to the Wellington Harbour Board at its meeting last- ’evening by Air J. Marchbanks, general manager. Tn view of the conditions existing in the second half of the year the total trade is very satisfactory, hut it might bp expected there would be a very marked decrease in the oresent year, which would continue until prices improved. A record tonnage of vessels was reported, •
