POLITICAL
FUSION PROPOSALS.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
DANNEVIRKE, November 25.
In reference to Mr Coates’ fusion statement, Mr Ransom made a statement to a “News” representative:— “This is the first definite statement ade by Mr Coates, Leader of the Reform party or any member of the party as to a definite line of policy upon which a fusion can be cons'dered between Reform and United Parties. However, it does not come in the tform of a definite official statement to the Government but in a statement of Mr Contes to the Press. lb was previously stated by Mr Coates that the fundamental d fferences between the Government would render a fusion impracticable, Whilst I, as Deputy-Leader of the House, and Acting-Prime Minister have very definite views on the seven points Enumerated by the Rt. Hon. gentleman in the sentiment referred to it would neither be fair to the Prim Min ster who is absent from New Zealand, nor to -my colleagues in the Cabinet and Government, to give an expression of whnt those views may he, If, however, Cabinet on behalf of h s Party is prepared to consider the report'on the proposals enumerated, I can assure him and the country that those proposals will receive our earnest consideration always keeping in view what is in the best interest of the Dominion and not necessarily the interests of the Party which I represent. It can be readily understood that during the absence of the Prime Minister from New Zealand the Government cannot possibly commit itself in this matter. Should Mr Coates be prepared to submit the proposals to Government then I will undertake to say that a formula will he prepared setting out arguments for and against the proposals for fusion, for submission to the Prime Minster immediately upon liis return to the Dominion.
