VALUELESS CHEQUES. r (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 24. George Cecil Hamy, 23, a motor driver, who was arrested in Wellington recently in a stolen car, to*day pleaded guilty to four charges of converting cars, one of breaking into a Remuera house and stealing a cheque book, one of theft and sixteen of obtaining sums totalling £76 by valueless cheques. Accused represented himself as the son of a prominent business man and cashed about twenty cheques between Auckland and Wellington, He was committed for sentence. CRUEL ODIOUS CRIME. DUNEDIN, Nov. 24. At the Supreme Court, Albert George Ashton (19), was sentenced to two years Borstal, for demanding money with menaces. Judge Kennedy said the prisoner blackmailed a man about to marry, and 'continued s'uqh blackmail after marriage. It was a cruel, odious crime. He did not even liLitate to impugn the honour of the young man, recently dead, to his parents, accusing him of leaving a woman in trouble, and demanding money. c6urt SENTENCES. NAPIER. November 24. The following sentences were inflicted hv Mr Justice Blair this morning. For attempting to break and enter with intent to commit theft, Allan Mclntosh, twenty-two months gaol, followed hv two years reformative. Ronald Hugh Mclntosh, 22 months gaol and one year reformative. Frederick Quinn and James Richard Cameron, 34 months reformative. His Honor said Allan Mclntosh perjured himself in the box and His Honor could not swallow his tale.
