The Railroad Unions’ “Big Four Brotherhood” Convention has endorsed the basic principle of a six dS»y week, with no reduction in the wage rate, to aleviate the unemployment among 375,000 of its 1,500,000 members. No methods of putting the principle into practice was adopted, but President Hoover will be asked to call' a conference to consider this quest on. FRENCH REFUSAL TO WORK PERMITS. Evidence of the desperate plight of dozens of returned soldiers was ayail-, able at the Jellicoe Hall to-day when 74 men awaited the allocation of five jobs . . It was an unenviable task that con* fronted the secretary to the, Christchurch R.S.A. (Mr E. F. Wilcox). The. Domains Board needed five men to start work on. Monday at Riccnrton Road, pulling down an . old. fence, erecting a new one, and laying; out foothpaths. Everyone of., the 74appli-, cants, for the jobs was a deserving case. Mr Wilcox said. Many of them had been out of work for weeks. The list had to be gone over time after time, until final'y the five most deserving cases were found. It was a thankless task telling 69 men that there was nothing for them. The Benevolent Committee of the R.S.A. approved 17 eases dealt with b ( v the secretary and scantioned relief lor another 16.

Although the figures at some of the relief depots in the city have shown a slight drop, there is still a greai deal of hardship, and none of the depots is very well stocked. Supplies (Jf clothing are very short, and verylittle money is being received for tlie relief of tlie needy.
