COUNCIL ECONOMIES
CUT IN WAITOMO SALARIES. TE KUITI, November 17. At a special meeting for the purpose of discussing the question of economy in administrative expenditure, the Waitomo County Council decided to make a cut in the salaries of the office and engineering staffs of about per cent, this to become operative from January 1, 1931. Tt was also decided that the members’ travelling expenses be reduced by 121 per cent, and that one of the cars used by the engineering staff be dispensed with. Tt was estimated that the cuts will result in a reduction of about £302 per auburn in administration costs.
DISCUSSION AT TAURANGA, FARMERS' INCOME REDUCED TAURANGA, November 17. At a meeting of the Tauranga County Council yesterday Mr C. Bailey moved that the following remit be forwarded to the Counties Association:— “As the income of the farming community is at present reduced by nearly 50 per cent., and fully realising that •the recovery of the Dominion depends almost entirely upon the farming community, we feel it our duty to suggest that nn Immediate reduction of at least 15 per cent he made in the wnge9 and salaries of all county employees throughout the Dominion.” Mr S. H. MacDougall expressed sympathy with the motion, but urged that a meeting of the three counties in the Bay of Plenty district be held first in order to fix a scale of wages. Tt was decided to defer the question until the next meeting in order to pro-’ cure information in regard to the industrial awards.
