An outbreak of fire on Tuesday afternoon in a small cottage at the west end of Park Street was extinguished by neighbours, before much damage was done. The fire originated in the vicinity of a chimney’ 1 , but was discovered before it had a good hold. The fire motor engine was sent to the scene but all danger was over before it arrived, a few buckets of water being sufficient to put cut the flames.

The visiting delegates to the South Island Poultry Association Conference held yesterday morning and night, were entertained on Monday evening at a social gathering in the Soldiers Hall, and yesterday afternoon were motored to Rimu Dredge and to Lake Kanieri. Last night tho President (Mr Geo. Jeffreys of Christchurch) in acknowledging the hospitality extended to the visitors, spoke in extremely appreciative terms of the beauty of the popular lako and its environs.

There was broadcasted from Christchurch last evening, the cantata “Life,” a poetical work by Wordsworth set to vocal and instrumental music by Mr Arthur Lillv, A.R.0.0. There was a chorus of 200 voices, supported by a full orchestra connected with the Royal ’Christchurch Musical Society. Mr Lillv was the musical judge at the Westland Competitions this year, and will be similarly engaged next year. Those who had the pleasure of hearing his composition last evening, must have enjoyed greatly the musical theme which pervaded the work. At the close Mr Lilb was given a wonderful ovation h\ what appeared to he a very large and enthusiastic audience.
