TRAIN SMASH
THREE GOODS TRAINS INVOLVED

Three, goods trains a'ere involved in a smasn at Te Kauwliata railway station, 54. miles uouth of Auckland siioiGiy before dayoreak. l-Gi 1 more than six hours the main line wad blocked by tire wreckage oi trucks and guards van. One train oil reaching Kauwliata from Auckland found a seoend train from Frankton on the station loop, where it was shunting. Tho train from Auckland waited on the main line at the station about twenty minutes for the line to clear but about 3.25, a third train also from Frankton appeared, turned on to the loop and crashed into the van of the second train. 'l'lie van collapsed and the broken framework "as driven into waggons in front, wrecking them.
The engine of the first train on the main lint' - wan standing approximately opposite the van of the second train which was on the loop. The driver and fireman of the first train seeing a smash was inevitable when the third train appeared leapt from the engine and dashed for safety, with only seconds to spare.
