REPORT ON SECONDARY HIGHWAYS.

I have the honor to report upon the progress of works on the Secondary Highways during the month of October. LAKE KANIERI ROAD. Slip Hill Widening was completed from peg 12 chains 50 links to 16 chains, and a coat of gravel placed on the road varying in width from 13 feet to 15 feet in width for 11 chains and 18 feet in width, and 18: inches to 2 feet in height at the toe of the Hill for 2 chains in length. The widening of the reef point on the north side of roadway was completed for 50 liiik*s in length, 4 feet in width, and an average height' of 6 feet. West of McKay’s Greek the wateftablo was cleared a. distance, of 5 chains, the road widened 4 feet with gravel and 1 chain to 4 , chains, a, large rock removed with explosives, from the north bank of the roadside at peg 4 chains, one 8 inch diameter. pipe culvert lengthened 3 feet, and a portion of l-oad widened 7 feet in width over a distance of 2 chains, -and a coat of gravel placed on the road 14 feet in width over a distance of 11 chains.: Flood damage repairs were effected to several Binall washouts, -and motor worn holes repaired with gravel from Kanieri to Lake Kanieri. The watertable was also cleaned, and widened at Slip Hill for 400 links' in length The amount of gravel used in widening and repairs to washouts, motor worn holes, etc was 531 cubic yards, and 65 oubic yards of reef, and earth at Slip Hill and McKay’s Greek Widening, and 20 cubic yards of stone. A short portion of widening was commenced on the narrow portion, of road 100 links from the crest of the hill east of Crayfish Creek . Bridge. 25 cubic yards of spoil being removed. Defective decking Bx 4 3/12 were removed and renewed on Stripland Creek Bridge. LOWER KOKATAI-II McARTHUR ROAD. Lower Tvokatahi McArthur • Road was lightly, graded to restore displaced gravel and surfacing material ! from Kanieri to the southern approach to Kokatahi Bridge, a distance of 72 miles, and lieavilv graded of grass growth on each side of road ; from Robinson Road to Graham’s Corner, a distance of 5 miles. A short 'cutting' above White Road was widened for two feet in width on each Bide of road with the Rower Gfadbr to give improved drainage dtirilig ivet Weathel* over a distance of 400 links. Repairs were effected to motor holes, depressions, numerous scours and washouts at culverts, principally at , the first pipe culvert beyond Dawson Road, and the first culvert east of 8 Harris Creek Bridge/'No. 4! Cropp’s j and Koiterangi Roads were repaired | With crushed metal and small, motor ■ worn holes repaired, with gravel. The roadside drain beyond Diedrioh ! ? :< Stockyard was cleared and re-opened i over a distance of 600 links. The < total quantity of gravel used in re- ;> pairs to scours, washout and repairs amounted to 251 cubic yards, and 2i> cubic yards of crushed metal. The ten ton roller was used in rolling the roar) after-grading, and repairing , scours over a distance of 8 miles which was re-rolled several times to solidify : the material.

OVERSEER’S MONTHLY REPORT. I have the honor to report upon the progress of wo±k curing the month of October. : NORTHERN RIDING. Kapitea Creek Bridge, Flood Damage. This work was put in hand and pile driving commenced under the direction of Bridge Foreman H. Reynolds, progress not being rapid owing to the hard driving met with. MAINTENANCE, i Flood damage repairs were effected to portions of the newly constructed road and drain between Chesterfield and Kapitea Creek, also to the foundation of a 'bridge near Chesterfield Station. Repairs were effected with gravel to portions of Arahura Valley and Humphreys Roads. Watortables were cleaned and several slips removed from Blue Spur-Arahura. Road. Humphreys Road drain was cleaned and reopened from the river hank to beyond the residence of Mr G. Lopas. CENTRAL RIDING. Yvhitcombe Valley Track Clearing and Repairs. This work was put m hand, and clearing effected over a distance of two miles. The large boulders were removed to form a bridle track for twelve to fifteen chains in length between' Robert’s Ford and the Green Elr.ff. The woodwork of the cage crossing Hokitika River above the Junction was removed and replaced with sound" timber, and clearing commenced and several repairs effected to the track between the Cage and Frew’s Creek. maintenance. Repairs were effected to portions of Blue Spur Road. Gorse and blackberry cleared and watortables cleaned, and bad holes repaired on Hoki-tika-Hau Han Road. South Hokitika and Adair’s Roads.—Repairs were effected with gravel to small depressions and washouts on Station Road. Flood damage repairs effected to the approach and protective lining renew-

ed, -also two piles placed in position on ■ the eastern approach to Municipal Cjreek Bridge. .The roadside drain oh Upper Kokatahi to Doughboy Road was re-opened and cleaned as far as necessary; several bad holes repaired, and defective covering removed and renewed on the upper end of Whitcombe Valley Road. Concrete pipe construction was continued at the Yard, Kanieri. All bridges and culverts on the Secondary Highways were examined and a report prepared as to the conditions and cost of repairs to each bridge. SOUTHERN RIDING. Ruatapu Road Widening. This work was advanced and practically completed as far as peg 12 chains, a fa ; " job, resulting throughout. Graham’s Road, balance of grant. The work of forming was completed a distance of 600 links, also two concrete pipe culverts constructed. .MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to portions 01 Ruatapu Road with gra.vel and partly graded with the Power Grader, between the Main Highway and Ruatnpu. Repairs were effected to Detour Road, a large tree removed from Richardson Road, and soft and boggy spots repaired on Three Mile Track. The Roadman attended to repairs on Robertson. Haddock and Wanganui Flat several washouts on Robertson Road and repairs to culvert approach near the Dairy Factory, Wanganui Flat Road. Flood damage repairs were effected to the lining and approach to Elllis’ Creek Bridge, TYaitalia Settlement Road. Sections of new work were pegged and levelled arid specifications prepared for the expenditure of votes for Graham’s and Petersen’s Rpad.
