There was a fairly long ea.rthqu akc shock experienced this morning at 4.48 o’clock. It was a steady roll without .any sharp features but continued for several seconds making some of the crockery and windows rattle. The direction was from east to w<ixt. There was a fairly prolonged tremor noticeable for some time afterwards.

The annual report of the Te Aloha Trotting Club records a profit for the year of £62, compared with a loss oi £lO2 in the preceding year. Full allowance had been made for bad debts and the accounts generally were in ,n Ihealithy condition. The sum of £l9l, rebate of totalisator tax, had been handed to the Te Aroha Jockey Olub for course improvements. Accumulated funds now amounted to £1638, of which £7OO had been lent, to the jockey club at 5 per cent, and £650 was on fixed deposit,
A. Riverton correspondent of the “Southland News” writes:—“l was out deep-sea fishing recently, and observed the ocean literally alive with whale feed and during the 30 years that I have been in Fovenux Strait I never saw the mutton birds so numerous before. Th°v were in hundreds of thousands feeding on the whalefeed. These are some of the signs by which I judge the mutton-bird season each year. Next season promises to be another very good one, owing to the abundance of feed.”
Two bulls, one of them infuriated to the point of madness by the efforts made to recapture it, carped' a considerable stir at Port Ahuviri, Napier, last week, when they escaped from the railway yards. One of them spent the remainder of the afternoon and a considerable portion of the night in the front garden of a resident, terrorising the occupiers of the house and a number of other people. The other bull, which caused a sensation in the normally peaceful suburb of Port Ahuriri, is dead, either from heart failure or strangulation by the ropes with which it was lassoed.
Generous tributes to the two Gov-©rnors-Cenernl who preceded him in New Zealand were paid by Lord Bledisloe during his address at the Canterbury West of England , Society’s reoeption on Saturday evening, “I most ask particularly for the sympathy and indulgence of the West of Englnnd people,” said his Excellency, “for 1 am following two of the most able, most enlightened, and most lovable men who have ever governed in the colonies—Lord Jcllicoe, a famous sailor, and a great sportsman, and Sir Charles Fergusson, a ksoldier and a man of ideals. “Lady Bledisloe and T hope to do what we can to follow their magnificent example, to maintain the high standard to which they have raised the office of the GovernorGeneralship in New Zealand. We need a great deal of sympathy in our work, and we hope it will most willingly come from you. the people of our own West of England.”

On a charge of using obscene language, at Blackball, Thomas Fitzpatrick was convicted and fined £1 with costs 72s 2d. James Shearer, charged with steal ng a length of chain, valued at 10s. the property of the - Grev Valley Collieries Ltd., was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in three months if called upon. He was ordered to return the chain, and pay witness’s expenses 14s 3d.
At the Magistrate’s Court Greymouth yesterday Janies Butler charged that being the driver of a motor car. and approaching the intersection of Guinness Street where for the time being the traffic was not controlled’ by a traffic inspector, failed to give way to a motor cycle approaching on his right, was fined £2 and cost 13s. He was also ordered to pay £4 12s 6d damage and cost of time lost by McMasters, and 10s witness’s expenses,
At the Magistrate’s Court Grey* mouth, yesterday, before Mr Meldrum te.M., Lionel George Hood, and John Joseph Morris were charged with breaking and entering the shop of J, Teppppt, AjAwhera Quay, and stealing jewellery of a total value of £65. Mor« ris was also charged with receiving jewellery, valued at £4 7a 6d, the property of John Tennent, and Hood was charged with receiving jewellery valued at £1 los the property of John Tennent. Botli accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them, and were committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Greymouth. Bail was fixed at one surety of £2OO or two sureties of £IOO each.
A boating mishap, in which three members of the Canterbury Rowing Club were concerned, occurred at.the New Brighton Bridge on Friday afternoon, when a double scull racing boat, in which the men were going picnicking, overturned. The men thought they would be able to get the boat through the piles of the bridge, but the current, which was flowing ail? a rapid rate, swept the shell towards a pile, and when a member of the crew put out a hand 1 to push the boat off it overturned in ten feet of water. The three men, Messrs J. 0. M’Griffin, Hi'S. Read and C. K. Pritchett, had their feet strapped, and had some difficulty in getting out from under tlie boat. Mr Pritchett was fully _ clothed, and had a hard battle among the piles to make his way to the bank, while the other two men had to work hard, with some outside assistance, to salvage the boat and their belongings,
