LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION. iUnited Press Association.—P j Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. J NEW YORK, November 14. Tony Canzoneri, the former featherweight champion, won the world’s light-weight crown, when he knocked out Al Singer, the defender in l the first round. JOHNNIE LECKIE BEATEN. NEW PLYMOUTH, November 16. Contrary to expectations, Low Edwards, an Australian youth of eighteen years, defeated Johnny Leckie, the New Zealand champion featherweight, on Saturday night on points in their fight.
'l’he bout went the whole fifteen rounds, and it was a very fine exhibition of boxing. Edwards owed his victory to his great speed in the early rounds. He damaged Lcckie’s eye. He had a
fair margin of points in his favour. Edwards proved a surprise packet. The impression when he entered ring was that he was not fit, and first few rounds scarcely improved his prospects, though Leckie could not penetrate his defence. Than, however, the Australian opened out with a barrage of blows, and he fought like a champion both in defence and attack.
