ST HELENS HOSPITAL
HON A. J. STALLWORTHY’S REMARKS.

AUCKLAND, November 13,
The fact that St. Helens Hospital in Auckland ’in full and booked up for two months ahead led to much criticism to which a reply was made by Hon A. J. Stallworthy (Health Minister). He said never had it been the function of St. Helens to provide accommodation for all, maternity cases, and it is unreasonable, fodsuggest that there was, any failure by the Department because more cases-i/ere now offering .than the home was. designed to accommodate. The excess; :of expenditure over income in 1930 in seven •St. Helens Hospital totalled £31,490. The .net cost per patient was as fol-, lows. Auckland: —£lo ; 18s; Christchurch £5 18s; Dunedin. £11; Gisborne £ll 4s;, Invercargill £11; Wanganui' £l3 4s; Wellington £8 16s. Average £9 16s. Air Stall worthy added it is generally admitted by Hospital Boards that the provision for maternity cases was their function and a number of maternity hospitals are being administered bv Boards with excellent results.
