PROVISION OF WORK
A MISSIOXER’S SUGGESTION
AUCKLAND, November 10
The opinion that the time is ripe for tlie erection of the Waitemata Harbour bridge was expressed by tlie Rev Jasper Calcler, Auckland City Missioner, in the course of an address last evening.
“The unemployment problem must be laced without delay,” said Air Calder. Other great undertakings that could be attempted in conjunction with the bridge work were the reclamation of Shoal Bay and Ngatannga Bay, garden suburbs eventually being formed. Mr Calder said that although he did not pretend to be a financier, lie was satisfied that the necessary money for the scheme was in the country at the present time. “In the event of war, millions would be quickly raised so that our boys could be sent overseas to kill and bo killed,” lie declared. “An equal claim can surely be made 'for a project which concerns the peace and prosperity of New Zealand.” He suggested that the Government or the authorities responsible for the bridge scheme might issue special bonds as bad been done during the war.
“The garden suburb scheme has been nicknamed ‘Jasper’s Dream,’ ”
remarked Mr Calder; “I would prefer
tlint dream to the nightmare of unemployment.” Among those present were the Hon. J. B. Donald, Postmaster-General and .Minister of Marine, several members of Parliament and members of local bodies.
