PROTECTION URGE®. v. (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, November 6. The House of Commons last night debated a irate member’s resolution urging the Government to take null ediate measures to stem the decline of activities in the iron and' steel industry. Conservatives urged the adoption of protect ion by tariff s. Tt was pointed out that wages in the industry in Britain were about double these paid on the Continent. Subsidies were, also advocated. ■On behalf of the Government, the P:r li.w.i'iunr.v Secretary to the Board of Trade. Mr William Smith, refused to consider a subsidy on tariffs, and dwelt cn (lie importance of re-organ-isation. He stated that consultations were still proceeding between representatives of the Government and the steel industry on regional organisation.
