TOBACCO-GROWERS

EM PIKE FEDERATION. TO PROTECT INTEREST'S. Stops have been taken to found a federation representing all the tob-acco-growing countries of the British Empire, which as a permanently established hotly, with headquarters in London, would he charged the protection of the interests of the growers and would maintain contact with the Empire Marketing Board, the British Empire Producers’ Organisation, and other organisations concerned with the development of Imperial trade. The federation would also promote research directed to the improvement of the quality of Empire-grown tobacco, better handling and packing methods, and similar matters, and would have as an ultimate function the possible mitigation of competition of an aggravated character between the various States in the Empire. There is already in existence a federation representative ol the tobacco growers of Southern and Northern

Rhodesia and Nyasa-land, and two delegates from South Rhodesia. Major Hastings, of Maclieke, and Mr P. Gres son, of Bromley, when in London recently, were actively engaged in conversations which are likely, to result in the constitution of a body which could voice'the views of the tobacco-growing industry of the British Commonwealth. Several meetings were held, attended by represontaiivps of Canada, the Union of South Africa, India, Kenya, Tanganyika-. and Cyprus. A formal decision to establish the new federation was taken, and no doubt is entertained that the general consent of growers in the various countries which are into"'\sted will he given. The federation will not he in any sense- a selling pool, hut through contract with manufacturers and brokers it is hoped that the--'Towers may secure a more rational determination in future of supply and demand.
