CAUSED BY RAT POISON
WELLINGTON EIRE. AN EXPERT’S OPINION. WELLINGTON, November 7, Investigations I by an expert of the Underwriters’ Association have led those interested to the conclusion that the recent fire on the top floor of Thompson Brothers’ warehouse in Biair Street was caused by the use of a certain brand of rat poison. A constituent of this poison is .phosphorus, and the preparation is said to throw off sparks on application of a certain amount of heat. It is thought that ithe requisite amount of heat may have been supplied by the bodies of the rats themselves. which possibly dragged food smeared with the poison into their nests. The fluffy material of the nests would supply the necesasry tinder. Evidence was placed before the Fire Board to-day, and a demonstration was given of the inflammability of the rat poison in use in the warehouse. It is proposed to take effective measures to ensure the prohibition of the use of this rat poison in New Zealand on the grounds that its use is a menace to property and life.
