Nightmarch was a hot favourite, carrying £36551, with In the Shade (£1336)), Count Palatine (£1292)) and Merry Damon (624) next best backed. My Own led on to the course proper, but passing the stand, Black Mint and Gay Crest were just in front of My Own, with Merry Damon and Desert Glow heading the others, just in front of Nightmarch and Concentrate, with Courageous last. There wap no change passing Cutts’s, while turning into the back straight Count Palatine moved up. The order at the mile post was Black Mint, Gay Crest, My Own, Desert Glow, Merry Damon, Count Palatine, Nightmarch and Concentrate. Running past the six furlong pest, Black Mint and Gay Crest were two lengths in front of Prodice with Desert Glow, Concentrate, Nightmarcn and Count Palatine handy. Black All lit withdrew a little further on, Gay Crest and Prodice leading round the home turn and into the straight, with Concentrate and Nightmares wide out, while My Own, In tile Shade and Courageous were also going well. Nightmarch and Concentrate drew clear at the distance, Nightmarch wearing his rival down to win by half a length. In the Shade, finishing strongly, was two lengths away, a length in front of Courageous, with My Own close up at the head of the others.

“There was no danger once lie got bis head in front,” said Roy Reed, the rider of Nightmarch in the New Zealand Cup after he finished the race. “In the last hundred yards it was all over, and I never had any doubt about it. After the Kamo Handicap, Gill was fined £2 for dismounting after doing his prt liiuiinary and' talking pj a stranger. After the Titoki Handicap, the stewards suspended Fergus, rider of Gold Lily, for a fortnight, for interference with Jaeldy Karo, which got a nasty wound near the lore leg. Muratti, with F. Hannan up, went nine furlongs on the sand to-day m 1.59. V.R.C. MEETING. N.Z. HORSES SHOW UP. MELBOURNE, November 9. The Weather was warm for yesterday’s V.R.C. races, and the attendance was good. The going was good This was the concluding day of the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. Holmdale, who was last m the early stage of the race, finished with ft good run in the Batman Stakes, to win easily. She returned to Sydney by boat this afternoon. Stephen, which is owned and trained by the former New Zealaiider, Lon Robertson, won the Flemingtcm Stakes easily. This is its first success. It cost five hundred guineas as a yearling. Hunt the Slipper had a good race and led in the early stages. The C. B. Fisher Plate proved a farce. Pliar Lap led always. This was his tenth win this season, making his twenty-fourth success. His total of stakes is now £46,842. His rider, Pike won the same race previously on Gothic, who ran the distance in 2.29,,. The New Zealander, First Acre made amends for his stablemate, Hunt the Slipper, by capturing the V.B.C. Handicap. He is trained hv A. D. Webster, and was ridden by T. Webster, and he knocked three-quarters of a second off Bacchus’s Australasian record. The New Zealander, The Banker, also won tills race. Vauntriin led over the last six furlongs in the Victorian Steeples, and won cleverly. His time knocked two and a-quarter seconds off the Flemington record. The owner, Mr Ryan, won the National with Nyangay.

There was an exciting finish in the Final Handicap, when Pinnacle ran a dead heat with Spang in the last stride. Pinnacle was twenty lengths behind the leaders at the half mile. Jt was a remarkable effort.

First Acre’s victory was greeted with a Maori lmka by several visitors in the stand enclosure. Results: — Batman Stakes.—Homedale 7.1 (W. Cook) 1; Miss Arrow 8.9, 2; Doctor’s Orders 8.11, 3. Twelve started. AVon by two and a-half lengths; three lengths; Land of Nod fourth. Time 1.40.

First Acre is the third New Zealander to win the V.R.C. Handicap since 1922, the others being The Cypher and The Banker. First Acre’s time broke the record by three-quar-ters of a second. Webster was delighted with his success. Phar Lap is to spell. J. C. McKenzie, the New Zealand rider, is settling in Melbourne. NEWCASTLE EVENT. SYDNEY, November 9.

The Great Northern Cup at Newcastle resulted :—Chrissie Yet, 8.10 (James) 1; Boamina 9.0 (Thomson) 2; Golden Speech, 7.3 (White) 3. Eleven started. Won by a length and n-quar-ter. Time 2.195, a course record. QUEENSLAND CUP. BRISBANE, November 9. Tile Queensland Cup resulted :—Toy Patrol, 6.13 (Gorman) 1 ; Vain Prince, 6.13 (Cook) 3; Derrvvnle, 7.0 (Nelson) 3. Twelve started. Won by a short length. Time 2.235.
