RESTRICTIVE ACTION

L\l .MIGRATION OF HINDUS AND

CHINESE

AUCKLAND, Nov. G

Tilts opinion was oxprcased by l7fo exccutive of tin; Auckland C liamhor of Commerce this morn r.g that it is in-

advisable to permit Asiatic or other foreign markets in Auckland. The resolution -was carried in preference to a recommendation liom idle Parliamentary and Taxation Committee that the council protest against the Harbour Hoard’s establishing another market, and particularly an Asiatic one.

_\! r L. A. Endy said the feeUng of the committee was strongly against the establishment i.C another market. The share capital of the proposed company was C 10,030, C'l.ooo of which was held by Chinese and the balance by a European f\Y. A. Donald).

In justice to the Harbour Hoard Mr T. B. Clay explained that when the lease of the proposed market site was sinned the hoard was innocent of the fact that a market was to be erected. An extraordinary position had h ,w ”

created. Ihit had the members of the board known as much before as they did now tK’ey would have probably adopted a different attitude. The City Council was in much the same position. At the suggestion of the committee, as the broad question 6f the Asiatic problein is under consideration by tiro executive of the Assoc ated Chambers of Commerce, it was further decided to take no action in the matter till a report from the association had been received.

The op nion was expressed that a more important problem existed in- respect to Hindus, whose numbers in New Zealand called for restrictive action inasmuch as they had increased by migration alone by -500 in the last t,en years. Air Endv said the impression that Chinese migration was increasing was wrong. Their numbers had declined by 300 in three years.
