RISE IN PASSENGER. FARES. (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at ti a.m.) SYDNEY, November 7. Shipping agents as a result of a conference announce, an increase of seven and a half per cent, on passenger lares between Australian ports and England, in the form of a surcharge to compensate for the adverse exchange. The increase will not apply to passages booked before November 21st. MR LANG’S INSTRUCTIONS. TO RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS. this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 7. New South Wales Railway Commissioners have assented to Mr Lang’s instruction to withdraw from the Arbitration Court the proceedings cabled his morning. The ex-Premier, Mr Bavin, has issued a statement severely criticising the Federal Ministry for failing to honour its promise, given at the Premier’s Conference in August last, to balance the Budget, effect substantial economies, and refrain from further taxation. He described it as the worst example of political, cowardice. It amounted to repudiation and Australia would be further discredited in the eyes of the world. He added that had it been thought the Federal Ministry would, not keep faith with the,State Premiers and its own solemn undertaking, there would have not been the slightest chance of an agreement being arrived at last August.
TOBACCO DUTIES
SYDNEY, November 6
The new tobacco duties are causing much adverse comment. Sir Mark Sheldon says that they will diminish production, and will cause further unemployment. Some of the retailers predict small men will have to go out of business, as tobacco prices must rise twenty per cent.
