STANDBY PLANT

WELLINGTON, November 7
Four powerful Diesel engines originally designed for use in German submarines, will be employed as a standby plant for the supply of electric power at Chrstchureh. The location of the plant is not decided, but it has been indered by the Government to ensure an adequate supply during next winter. The engines were designed by German engineers during the war but they had not lieen installed at the conclusion of hostilities anti under the terms of peace Germany handed them over to England. Some time ago three were sent to Auckland for installation a Penrose subsation. The engines will shortly be shipped to Lyttelton from England and slight modifications are necessary before they are placed in use. i

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7
As a result of the smash on Riccarton Roard on August 2, when a car driven by Edgar Clement Mann, ran into a bicycle and killed tbe rider Elizabeth Irvine, the parents of the young woman claimed £1,500 damages in the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice (Sir M, Myers), and a. jury of twelve, The plaintiffs were Joseph Irvine of Christchurch u retired boat maker and bis wife Sarah Ann Irvine, Mr Thomas who appeared for Mann, a farmer, of Templeton, admitted liability.
The jury wove asked to fix* the amount of damages. Mann had paid £250 into the court as compensation and the jury awarded £SOO.
