DEATH AT A ZOO
INFANT HIPPOPOTAMUS
AUCKLAND, November 3
A baby hippopotamus was born at the Auckland Zoological Park in the early hours of yesterday. Unfortunately it died within live hours of brith, owing to neglect on the part of its mother. Its loss has caused great disappointment to the zoo officials, who had taken elaborate precautions to care for it. It was a healthy animal, 3ft in length and weighing 901 b. This is the .second death that has followed the birth of a hippopotamus in Auckland Zoo. IVlien the first baby was born in September, 1923, the father, Charka, rolled upon it and crushed it to death. The second baby was born in January, 1929. The father and mother were kept in separate apartments as a measure cJf protection. This baby is now nearly two years old.
When fully grown a hppopotamus is worth about £4OO. Recently there have been inquiries from Australian zoos ns to the possibility of purchasing a young female hippopotamus, but as Bella’s progeny have been males, there has been no prospect of fulfiiiling the order.
