There was a* huge attendance to see the Melbourne Cup including several New Zealanders.

Heavy rain, which was accompanied by hail, fell after the first race. The ioilowing are the results;— . Cup Hiirdle Handicap:—Clirta 9.2 (D. Zealley) 1, Cyanate 10.5 2, Plundere 10.13 3. There were nine starters. Won by three-quarters of a length; half a length. Tirile 3.43 JV

Railway ‘High-Weight Handicap:— Fust Arrow 9.10 (J. Winks) L, S-trd-goff 10.10 2, Land of Nod 9.13 3. Twenty-three started. Won by a neck; third a head away. Time 1.15 J. The winner is trained by- the former New Zealander, Lor Robertson. . November Nursery Handicap.—Cama 7.9 (A. Wilson) 1, Veridique 7.11 2, Donna Celesta 7.7 3. Eleven started. The Cup scratch ings were Wapilly (at 12.6 p-.m.) and John Buchan (at 12.25 p.m.).

Phar Lap had a remarkable reception after the Cup race, which he won o' Ion"' w>v from hour', and he was not extended at the finish.

Phar Lap lias now won £44,637 in stakes, and he is second on the list' to Amounis, and is ahead of Gloaming. Phar Lap cost 160 guineas as a New Zealand yearling. This is his rider, J. Pike’s first Melbourne Cup win in fourteen mounts. He is a native of Newcastle, New South Wales. Phar Lap travelled nicely all the way. He was galloped on sightly near the half mile, but hi responded gamely when he was asked to make a final effort, CUP RACE DESCRIBED. Temptation took the lead at the start, and he led past the stand from Muratti, Carradale, First Acre, Star God, Phar Lap and Balloon King with Veilmond running last of the field of fifteen. At the mile, Temptation was out four lengths in front from Muraitt.i and (1) rradale. Then there came handy, First Acre, Phar Lap, Star God, Balloon King, Shadow King and Second Wind. Tregilla was now

third last, and Veilmond was last. At the six furlongs, 'Temptation bad only two lengths of a lead from Carradale and Muratti, with Star God next, just ahead of Phar Lap, Second Wind, and Shadow King. Temptation was still in change a,t the turn, and was the first into the straight, M"iratti. Carradale and Pha-r Lap following him.

Then Phar Lap took the lead at the two furlongs, and he won running away with three lengths to the good. The third horse was three-quarters of a length away, and Donald was fourth, then came Veilmond. Ei"st Acre, Tregilla, and Soulton. The last two to finish were Nndean and Carradale.

The time was 3min 27 £ secs. The sectional times were: First four fuilongs, 55secs; next four, 51 i secs; succeeding four 52i-secs; last four 49secs; final six furlongs, 1 min 16sec«; last mile in i .41isecs.

The stake of the cup was worth £9,229.

Phar Lap’s destination during the week-end was the- St. Alban s Staid 'Farm, near Geelong. He- arrived on the course to-day ail hour prior to the race.

Med hurst) 1, Pentiums 9.2 2, Lampra 8.3 3. Fourteen started. Von by a neck; half a head. Princess Betty, was fourth.' Time 1.39. Although the stake value of the cup was £9229, that of the minor events was £450, apiece.
