THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
KNOWLEDGE OF GRASSES. Approximately 90 per cent of the wealth of New Zealand is derived from grass, and one would therefore assume that the modem farmer who makes his living, or the bulk of it,, from the mixture of plants and 1 herbs, which wo broadly term “grass,” would make it his first business to know every last word about each of these humble, but vitally important species. Actually, most farmers are almost totally ignorant on the subject, and beyond la nodding acquaintance . with one or two of the more ..important species in their district, apparently havo no desire for a fuller knowledge of tire varieties, habits and value of the humble growth on which their fortunes are dependent. ’ —North Island Farmer,.
