INTOXICATED MOTORIST.

ASHBURTON, Oct. 31

Robert Henry Mac Lean was charged with intoxication in charge of a car and sentenced' to fourteen days hard labour and delicensed until January 30th, 1931. He was also convicted and ordered to pay 34s costs for negligent driving. Accused drove a car through a gate at Hinds.

At the inquest to-day on Clifford Js’atham Young,. aged 21 years, who was killed instantly on October sth in a collision between a' motor cycle which he was riding and another one ridden by Lionel Frederick Palmer, 23, the Coroner , found that the evidence was insufficient to, show whether any blame was attachable to Palmer, hut that it appeared to indicate that the deceased suddenly cut a corner withoutthe necessary warnng, and the collision was thereup unavoidable on Palmer’s part, The cycles were travelling in opposite directions, on the same road, and were approaching a junction where the deceased was turning to the right, As the smash occurred the deceased was thrown against tjia footpath karbing breaking his neck,.Palmer, and a boy who was riding pillion on his machine escaped injury. :1

A photographer and his .assistant to-night were injured when a deafening explosion accompanied with a blinding flash of light shook the Wellington Winter Show building where a British motor car show is being held. Suffering from extensive burns to their faces and hands Leslie Wallace, a photographer, and Ronald Prescott, his assistant, are' in hospital. Wallace and his assistant were preparing to take a flashlight photograph of the “Golden Arrow” ear when, without warning, the magnesium pqwder in the holder exploded with a tremendous report. A special sitting of the Police Court was held at .Milton Courthouse this morning, when a youth named • Albert George Ashton, was charged. on remand'‘On two counts of writing blaokmailng letters, He was charged, first that on or about October 13, 1930, he did, with menace, demand from David Moyes the sum. of £4O with Intent to steal, The. aepoiid charge against Ashton was that on Qptober 8, 1930, with intent to defraud by means of a certain false pretence, to wit by falsely represently that he was a single woman, named Violet Manton, who had given birth to a child In 'August 1930, and required the sum of £35 lOs.to pay doctor’s and confinement did attempt to obtain from Jonathen Begg the sum of £35 10s toy means of the said false pretence. The accused pleaded guilty on tooth charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

TROUBLE ON STEAMER.

WELLINGTON, November 1

The coastal vessel Kapitjti in which the steam engine and boiler have been replaced by internal combustion engines, is tied up at Wellington wharf, although ready for sea. It is stated that the Seamen’s Union demands that members of the Union be employed in the engineroom. In the opinion of the ship owners there is no need for the men, as the vessel is designed to be run by two engineers only. The carrying of an unnessary man would defeat the object of the alteration. There is a deadlock between the shipowners and the Union on the question
