PASSENGERS BY RANGITANE
AUCKLAND, October 30
The exceptionally large number of 497 passengers was carried by the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor vessel llnngitane, which arrived at from. Southampton yesterday afternoon.
The passengers reported an excellent voyage until five days ago, when the ship ran into very heavy weather. Except for thirty passengers, who will tranship for Australian ports, and a sprinkling for fishing or to visit relatives, most of the passengers were New Zealanders returning from holiday visits to England. About half the passengers remaining in New Zealand had hooked through to southern s towns. Among the third-class passengers was a party of sixteen domestic servants who have come out under the fiovernment free pasnge system, which is still operating, although assistance to immigrants in general has been suspended. On the ship was also a party of ten youths brought out undler the Church of England settlement scheme. Mr T). E. R. Davies, who is in charge of the hoys, is a candidate for the Anglican ministry, and expects to he ordained for work in the Waikato diocese.
