The monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society has been put forward two days next week, anu will be held on Tuesday night at 7.30, instead of Thursday evening.

Drainage matters in connection with Station road were also looked into during the tour. The main and district roads were found generally to be in very good order.

An unusual position happened in the Supieme Court at Dunedin, on i'liursday, a juryman in a case in which a young man was charged with manslaughter and negligent driving failing to appear. • His Honor Mr uiistae Kennedy later said that a medical certificate showed the juryman to be unfit to serve again this session on account of heart trouble. The Crown Prosecutor and the accused consenting, his Honor made an order for the case to proceed with eleven jurors, the position being provided. for in the Crimes Act.
A Christchurch importing firth, ort opening a case otf goods, front Germany this week, was surprised to find, comfortably nestling in the packing, a lizard about three inches long. Its colours are subdued greys and browns, - with bauds of darker colour across the body. It is strange how the lizard got; into the case. Stranger still is the, fact that, although it.was there for at least eight weeks, it is still alive and livelv, apparently none the worse for its long sea voyage in close confinement, without food or water.
A very small but expensive mail was brought to New Zealand by the American steamer Golden West, which reached Auckland from Los Angeles on Monday (states the ll New Zealand Herald.”) The vessel had only three bags of mail, and the carriage of it to New Zealand will cost the American Government about. £955 a bag. The Golden West is owned by the Oceanic and Oriental Navgation Company, which has a contract with , the American Government to carry mail to New Zealand. The service is . a monthly one, and the mail subsidyis at the rate of 10s 6d per nautical mile, or about £2866 a voyage.
