A QUESTION OF COINAGE. THE HALF-CROWN PIECE. A proposal that the half-crown price should he withdrawn from circulation, on account of its liability to be mistaken for the florin, meets with little or no support in banking circles in London, The suggestion has been made that our silver coinage should consist of (3d, 1/-, 2/-, and 4/-j and that the four shilling coin should weigh less than double, the weight of the florin as that would he too heavy, Officials at more than one London leading hank at which a representative of “The Observer” called expressed the opinion that the half-crown was a very serviceable coin and that no change was necessary. They had, they said, heard no complaints as to the half-crown being easily mistaken for a florin. It was quite impracticable, they pointed out, to make the four shilling coin of less weight than double the weight of the florin, as silver is paid into banks in bags representing certain amounts, and the amounts, and the amount is arrived at by the weight of standardised coins. “There is more confusion between the 5/- coin and the 4/- piece,” said one cashier, “than there is between the 2/6 and the 2/- piece. The real offender in our silver coinage is the threepenny-piece, which is small and difficult to handle. No one likes the threepenny-piece in this country, but I ani told it is a very popular coin in Scotland.”
