UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD
ELECTION DEMANDED
(By Telegraph—Press Association!. DUNEDIN, October 30, A deputation from the Trades Hall waited on Hon. Mr Taverner, Minister of Public Works, and protested strongly against the selection of the workers’ representatives on the Unemployment Board being in the hands of the Minister alone.
Mr J. Robinson declared: “It is nndertsood, and everybody will think that the reason the Minister will not allow the Unions to vote is that lie wished to make the selection himself, and to appoint men which the Cabinet can rely on to* do the job that the Governent wished them to do and not study the interest of the people they are supposed to represent.” It was also argued that the time for the closing of the nominations for workers representatives should be extended for a month. Unless the Unions were .given a selection vote, the Labour organisations would have nothing to do with the Board.
Mr Taverner said that the claims were reasonable, and he would place them before his colleagues. The Government’s desire was to obtain the co-operation of all sections.
