INDICATIONS OF LABOUR SPLIT,
CANBERRA, Oct. 30.
In the Federal House of Representatives, speaking on the -Acting-Pre-mier, .Mr Fenton’s motion for a wefek’s adjournment. Mr Latham the Leadei of. the Opposition, severely criticised what he termed the Government's “shilly shallying.” He said that the Commonwealth was., drifting, at the rate of thirty thousand sterling per day. The result of the New South AVuiles election,, on which the Government had . been waiting, had greatly aggravated the position, and never had there been such an exhibition of incapacity .as this by any. Government. The Acting Prime Minister, Mr (Fenton, was in the act of replying, when, to the amazement of everybody, Mr ißjley, .-ft junior meml>er of the Labour Party, moved the “gag.” Pandemonium prevailed. Mr Fenton turned, to Mr Riley, and requested him. to call the division, i The Opposition members shouted “You, are gagging your own leader!” , Tims a division was taken. Then „ . further sensation followed when Mi Lyo ns, the Acting Federal Treasurer, and also a private Labour member, Mr -Guy, crossed the floor and voter, with the Opposition. The motion that the question be put was then . carried by ■3B votes to 28. Mr-Lyons’s . attitude . has accentuated the division in the Labour ranks, and the, gravest political developments are expected. ;'rivA Vi'SipULLIN’S ATTITUL® : UPHELD. I/ON DON , 0< t. 30.
