BURGLARIES ADMITTED

GISBORNE, October 31
Burglaries were admitted by a maori Tuhemt Matehe, aged 31, at the Police Court this morning on four occasions in the past week. He broke' into houses; entered occupied bedrooms and stole sums of money, twice ■Pram the trousers pockets tof the sleeping owners’. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
OCEAN RACE. THE PROPOSAL LAPSES. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 31. A challenge from Dr F. Bennett (Australia) for a. race with a New Zealand yacht across Tasman Sea has lapsed, according to reports made to the Canterbury ’Sailing and Power Boat Association last niglit. There is a possibility of the event being staged next. year. It was reported that a suitable boat had not been found, but it was intended to have one of a ketch make, specially built. FOUND DROWNED. DUNEDIN, Oct. 31. At an inquest on James Riley, aged 60, married, whose body was found on the rocks at St. Clair beach on Sunday , lportiing, .ths Coroner .remarked that the deceased apparently slipped and fell, on the rough’ stony bench and was disabled and thereupon drowned. A verdict., of found-drowned was returned. OBITUARY. DUNEDIN, Oct. 31. ObiPuaa'yC—W’llter / ”ow, aged :76 years, ex-chairman of. Harbour Board and ex-president of the Chamber of Commerce. INDECENT ASSAULT. DUNEDIN, October 31. Henry Samuel Clegg, 31, for indechtly assaulting a girl aged seven, was sentenced to two years reformative.
THEFT SENTENCES,
DUNEDIN, October 31
In the Police Court, Robert Manson appeared for sentence on five charges of theft. Accused, was ..sentenced to six months imprisonment oil a charge of stealing £SO the property of Waipiata Athletic Club; also to six months for stealing £36 the property of White and Co., the sentences to be concurrent. On other charges he was convicted and discharged.

Taka pun a Jockey Club has decided to introduce a five shilling totalisator at the spring meeting next month. The committee which investigated’ the scheme reported thuF if the experiment was to be made, it proved the economic conditions undoubtedly called for it now. The continued reduction in tote returns and attendance at races called for some innovation and the present units of betting were proving too high for the majority. Taknpona is the first club in Auckland to introduce a five shilling tote. LABOUR NOMINEES. AUCKLAND, October 31. Auckland Trades Labour Council'decided to support F. S. Cornwall of Wellington and G. Thurston of Christchurch, as nominees for workers’ representatives on the Unemployment Board. The Council strongly eondemnthe method of Mr Purtell, secretary, saying there was certain to he a storm , if someone is appointed against the wishes of Trade Unionists. SUFFERING OF A DOG, AUCKLAND, October 31. Seven days’ gaol without the option of a fine was - the sentence passed on Albert Arthur Cousins at the Police Court for pausing unnecessary suffering to a dog. It was stated that Cousins took an hour to hill a pup using an iron bar and hammer. The defendant said the dog went mad and attacked a baby.
