While Air Stanley Baldwin was walking /tnrough Gloucestershire he heard that two elderly women in a village wore straining, their menus in keeping up an asyitun tor lee hi emitided girls. , Air Baldwin walked to, Stroud, collected 2uo dirty and crumpled i;I notes, and wrapped them up in newspaper with a letter saying that a passing vagabond wished to do something for the establishment the like of which might one day shelter himself. Thou lie persuaded a yokel to bribe an urchin to deliver the parcel without saying whence it came. This story, described as well authenticated, appears in “The Deal (Stanley Baldwin,” by Air Wickham Steed. Mr Steed remarks that if any obvious successor were in sight Air Baldwin's chance of retaining the Conservative leadership would be small, but there is no such successor, lie suggests, however, that if Mr Baldwin can put his new vigour of words into deeds in the service of a go-ahead and far-sighted Conservative policy he may cease to lire an enigma and become a national asset.
