WESTLAND TROTTING CLUB

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28tli, ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of members was held at the Club Rooms at 8 p.m. Present:—-Messrs C., J. .P. Sellers (i r oted to tlie Chair), A. W. Yarrall, 11. Newman, j; J. Breeze, E. W. Heenan, W. E. Richards, J. Stafford, J. J. Mclntosh, A. E. Benjamin, and M. Houston (Hon. -Sec.). Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs McGregor, Whiley, AV, Newman.' and Neville. The' minutes were road and confirmed. ANNUAL REPORT.

Gentlemen, —T have pleasure in submitting herewith for your consideration tile annual report and statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year.

At the last annual meeting the members present elected the following gentlemen as' lbe executive for the year -viz.:—Messrs J'\ McGregor, J. j. Breeze Jnr., ,T. J. Mclntosh, MHouston, C. J. P< Sellers, A, W. Yarvall, ft. Whiley, J. Stafford, C, 9. Neville;-\V; E: Richards, B. W, Heenan, D.R. Dowell, J. J. Mclntosh. Jnr. and H> Newman. These gentlemen were all, attentive to their duties and took a- .very keen interest in the conduct of the Club’s business, The Club held its annual race meeting •on the Hokitika Racecourse -on. Friday, 3rd ’January, 1930. The weather conditions were perfect and the meeting was a most satisfactory one. Record nominations and acceptances were received the various events were all well filled, and flic racing was most iuteri 3, siting. The sum elf £7750 I.os was passed through the totalisator as against £6064 the previous year, which is an increase -of £1686 10s. The .gate receipts also showed a substantial increase, the sum of £2lB 17s being taken, as against £IOO. 5s at the previous UieCting. The amount paid to thei-Government ’by way of taxation amounted to £6Ol 16s 3d, which is a very severe drain on the resources of; a small Club such as ours which only .pays £7OO in (stakes. The meeting showed a. fairly * substantial profit and as will be. seen by the balanae sheet, the liabilities of the Club have been considerably -reduced.

Under- the arrangement made with the Westland Racing GlvJ\ the Government rebate' of totalisator tax amounting. to £96 17f3 5d was paid to that Club for the rent of the racecourse and appointments, Mr A. Commons, Of ROnraer&j attended the meeting in the Capacity of Stipendiary iStewatd and his report oil the conduct of the meetingwas very satisfactory,'

The refreshment rooms were conducted on behalf of the Cluib by lady supporters under the mannigpment of Mrs 0. Fowler, and were of much assistance to the finances of the Club, which greatly f appreciates their efMr D. J. Evans represented the Club at tliev,annual Trotting Conference in Wellington i n July, and the thanks of the. Club are due to him in this connection.

Our next .trotting race meeting will be held on Saturday, 3rd January, 1931, and it will be necessary to draw up a programme for same a,t once. A large (quantity bf clay has recently been spread on the track which was badly worn in places, and it promises to Ibe in first class order for our next meeting. The thanks of the Club are due to the ‘Westland Licensed Victuallers for their donation of a silver cup to tho winner of the Westland Handicap, and I wish also to express our thanks, to Messrs J. Noble and H. Butland yrlio acted as handicapper and starter respectively, to the Municipal Band for.-supplying a programme of music and to all others who willingly gave their assistance at the meeting. . ~1;.;:. . The balance sheet showed receipts totalled £IBO3 2s, nominations and acceptances £256 15s, totalisator. £1057 ss, subscriptions £4B 3, gates £2lB 17s, privileges £95 os 7d, Governmenttax refund £96 17s Bd. The payments, including stakes £7OO, Government taxes £6Cfl, totalled £2548 15s Bd, including a balance brought forward of £BO9 14s, which had been reduced during the year to £740 13s Bd. The Chairman moved the reception of the report and adoption of the balance sheet. He referred to the satisfactory position of the finances and en.lorsed the references in the report to the isuccess and general conduct of the annual meeting. Seconded by Mr lieenan. A. quantity of correspondence was read and received. The Secretary reported on a eon-

tract let for the supply of day for the track. The action was approved and £lO was granted towards the cost of tram and truck, such to become the property of tho Club. The Chairman moved that apart from the fact taxation on Clubs was during and for the period of the war voluntarily agreed to Iby the various Racing and Trotting Chubs of New Zealand, this Club emphatically protests against the increased and iniquitous taxation now imposed which will inevitably cause some Clubs to go out of existence.
