The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1930. A PREMIER POSITION.

The premier position held by South Westland in the great beauty of its sc-enic resorts, is well evidenced by the attention paid to the locality in the illustrated annuals now in course of world-wide circulation. Generous space is given to the district with depictions of selected scenery. One ot the first impressions is the remarkable variety of the selection, embracing all kinds of scenic splendour. Lake and bush scenery and mountain views, are given in great profusion, and tlie result is a feast of natural beauty. While much has been done in the- way f road improvement to facilitate transport south, and all credit may be paid deservedly for what has been done, the enterprise of those responsible for altering for the creature comforts of visitors must not be overlooked as being a- prime factor in building up the tourist traffic. Back some twenty-live years ago, when the first of the officers of the Tourist Department were sent tins way by the late Mr Seddon to spv out the land, end report on its scenic attractions, me of the first steps recommended was the provision of more modern accommodation to cater for the class of traffic which tourist resorts attract. Tine officers were wise in their recommendation, and the advice fell on good ground, ft was not long before a gradual effort beg,on to shape itself through private enterprise to provide one of the things most needful for the pew industry to be created. "Now, in the fullness of time, inucl 1 has been done by private enterprise all along the route to meet the requirements of the travellers, and tourists a.re served as well and as reasonably on the southern tour, an n any other part of the Dominion. At the favourite glacier resorts, settlers who pluekily entered into the ■'m,sim>ss, have not (spared expense in Hu l lengths they have gone to assure •be comfort and personal convenience of '■•ivtrons. T! ic accommodation is well found and equipped in every reMpect, while For those who go climbing or on more venturesome mountain trip", may have all the essentials lor the best outfit, and excellent guides are at their disposal. Those factors have holoed in no small way to push s’oulh Westland into a premier position as re,gnrds popularity with tourists. Tt is always interesting, also, to obtain a glimpse of the views of visitors of the efforts to eater for their wants, and invariably they speak in bbdi praise of the neeonunedation provided, while also there is praise for the excellent transport services which are established. The far south bars been brought very close now by motor transport, and for this service, first class cars and experienced drivers are provided, and with the excel-

lent road,, now practically an all weather route, there docs not aippeai to he any ground for ■complaint, am nothing but praise for the alt rounc. excellent, services in connei lion wit I a tour into South Westland. A holiday in the south takes the travcllci into a new world. ’lie- heavy bush country and the ove: Gapping . mountain range ail'ord new and novel surroundings, and present- a wonderful outlook at every point. The hush tracks now Ibcinv, opened up, assist to give closer intimacy with the internal beauty of the bush, which al ways lias such an interesting forest floor. The one thing necessary to establish the reputation of the resorts ifi advertising and still more advertising. Certainly, this season the distriet is catered for greatly in the illustrated annuals which nowadays are such works of art, but it is necessary to maintain publcity all the year round, for South Westland is not a seasonal resort, in that the suniinei may be considered ' the best time of the year for a holiday. It is an al! the year round resort, and as such provides greater variety still in its remarkable attractions changed in a measure as they are with the rich whiteness of the winter'seasons.
