Speaking at a dinner given liv the South Canterbury Cliambcf to the Chambers of Commerce Conference last evening, lie said that, be would like to c:institute ; the Legislative Council on the Hollowing lines: Three merchants representing the Cliambeis of Commerce; three manufacturers nominated by the Manufacturers’ Association; six larmers. namely two sherpfaimers, one wheat grower two dairy farmers, and one fruit farmer; live representatives <d organised la,hour; two reprcsentatiius of education (professors or head-111 inters); three representatives ol religious bodies, one Anglican, one NonCon ormist, and one Cathol.c; all exHigh Commissioners, all ex-Carr,net Ministers with at least five years’ torvice unless still in the House; md twenty general appointments reptcsenting men of long local government or parliamentary service. Tin se appointments would lie made by Pol* liatueiit to secure men ol national reputation, all appointments to be for fix years.
Rz plying to the toast of Parliament, the Hon. 1\ A. do. la Ferrelle said that it was essential that the Dominion should promote its own industries. He regarded tourist traffics as one of New Zealand’s industries. The time was not far distant when £10.000,000 annually would come into the country through the tourist traffic. Tt was encouraging to see that, in addition to Government efforts, private enterprise was playing a part in developing’ tourist traffic.
