N.Z. FINANCE

HALF. YEARS RETURNS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, October 24. A preliminary statement of the public accounts for. the six months period ended September 30th. , was made by the acting. Minister of Finance in the House, to-day. The revenue was £9.057,880 and showed a decrease of £1,111,467, the customs , decrease being £277,000 compared with a drop of £174,000 allowed in 1 the Estimates. Owing to the heavy decline in imports there appeared a likelihood of Customs receipts being £250,000 below the Estimates for the year. The expenditure was £12,237,467," and showed an increase of £291,167. but this was due to an unusually large amount being appropriated during the period towards the redemption of the debt, the actual position of the annual appropriations showing a decrease of £42,859.

It was expected that with strict control, the expenditure will he kept within the estimates and instructions have been issued that the expenditure must be reduced for the remainder of the financial year.
